The Essential Riding Outfits

By Jack Wogan

Only the more emancipated of the well to do ladies indulged their fancies of going for a horseback ride on the lands they owned, leaving the safety and privacy of their carriages, several centuries ago. Men's riding equipment back then was, of course, significantly different. Whereas the riding equipment for ladies, in times when an intricate notion of decency was far more important than functionality in what concerned women and clothing, well... there could be no such thing.

Today we would reject the decent ladies countryside clothing that rich women had to wear. Just like downtown, the long and ample skirts and tight waists were a must at horseback for these avant-garde amazons of their times, who were compelled to ride with both legs on one side of the horse, as the least of all expectations.

This changed very much with horse racing becoming a fashion and a big business. Professional groomers were attending to the several beautiful race horses that a rich stable owner had, and professional jockeys were riding the noble and valuable animals to the victories much treasured. With lighter bone structure, girlies were sometimes secretively employed instead of exceptionally slim boys to ride. However, professional outfits became a must.

The elegant lines of lady riders in specific jockey outfits gradually became a sight we enjoy very much, after subtle changes in jokey fashion and significant changes in morality. Countryside clothing for horse riding makes us think of functional shapes, fabrics and materials and other such practicalities now. The chaps, gaiters, jackets and riding caps that contemporary lady jockeys would wear have preserved some of the first jockey outfits looks, but their constant evolution allows for maximal insulation as well as for freedom in movements both for the jockey and the horse.

Similar changes have affected ladies riding boots. Online stores specialized in riding outfits like BP Country offer ladies all kinds of mid boots and tall boots, including fancy riding boots of both sizes. Either leather or contemporary insulating materials combine with rubber soles to insure both mobility for the feet and legs and protection against injuries, as well as against humidity or mud. And in order to make horseback riding an enthralling experience even on rainy or snowy days, as horses must be ridden in every season, the horse riding boots will successfully be completed by chaps.
