To Camp or to Glamp: that is the question.

By Hannah Buckley

Remember when all that was needed for a great time at a festival was a sturdy pair of Docs, a moth-eaten tent, and lots and lots of cider? Well, it seems that the days of roughing it may be numbered.

A recent study found that, for women at least, a new fashion trend is rapidly consigning the traditional way of festival-going to the mud pit - it's called glamping. If you don't know what glamping is, it's basically doing festivals on the posh, and there's sure to be plenty of it going down at the forthcoming Kendal Calling, Creamfields, Bestival, Leeds and Reading festivals.

One glamping essential is having a comfy place to crash for the night, such as a hotel or a luxury, pre-erected tent. The survey revealed that as many as 1 in 5 female UK festival-goers simply don't enjoy the normal tent experience and demand something special.

The survey also ranked women's top festival essentials. Wipes, perhaps unsurprisingly, were ranked number one, with toiletries and makeup claiming fourth spot as items that absolutely must make it into a festival backpack. Vanity in general certainly appears to be a growing fashion trend at festivals, with 40% of women taking along at least one mirror.

The national survey, which questioned over 1000 female festival-goers, found that many will be subscribing to the glamping fashion trend by choosing to stay in up-market, pre-erected tents that feature comfortable beds. Caravans and camper vans also get the thumbs up in favour of roughing it a ground level, as do hotel and rented cottages. It's clear that festival-loving women deem a good night's sleep an essential part of the experience, and they're happy to pay for it.

Those women who were not planning to cough up for a posh room expected to spend about 200 on a branded tent, a trendy parka and designer wellington boots - so presumably, ruining manicured nails by sliding around in a mud bath is not high on their festival itinerary. That said, if you are planning on glamping it up in a hotel or cottage that has a steaming-hot power shower, then what's to stop you from making the most of the mud.
