A Brief Intro To Diamond Gems History

By John S Stewart

Diamond Introduction

The word diamond originated from the Ancient Greek word "aramas", which meant "unbreakable". Diamonds for Diamond Jewellery such as Diamond Earrings, Diamond Pendants, and Diamond Rings, were mined from the banks of the Rivers Godavari, Penner and Krishna, around 3000 years ago, but were likely to have been found around these areas approximately 6000 years ago.

In 1772 it was scientifically proved that diamonds are composed totally of carbon.

In the year of 1772, researchers determined that diamonds were solely made up from the chemical carbon.
After this time at around the start of the 19th Century, the popularity of diamonds increased markedly due to greater supplies, better cutting and polishing preparation techniques, and also due to the increased wealth that many countries started to find.

During the 20th Century the most recognised diamond grading systems was introduced by the GIA - Gemological Institute of America. They basically determined the trade of specific diamonds by how light travelled through it and how the light was dispersed or refracted.

Before a diamond is cut and polished, it can be determined by its structure from where in the world it originates. After it has been prepared, it is virtually impossible to say from where it came.

A "paragon" is said to be a large and flawless example of a diamond.

Diamonds are the hardest minerals found, with a Moh's scale reading of 10.

Early History Of Diamonds

During the very early days of diamonds history, across India they were commonly used to protect people during battle and to drive away any evil spirits.

Diamonds Through The Dark Ages

As was the case with many gemstones, the diamond was also used in medicine. A diamond was thought to heal wounds and cure illnesses, and if ingested, sickness.

Diamonds And The Middle Ages

As the old beliefs attached to protection and healing diminished, the diamond was starting to find its place as a precious gemstone, and its real worth in the World was found as supply and demand moved upwards.

Some giant examples in this period gave rise to even greater popularity, and their demand increased massively from this.

As they became scarcer in India, mines were first found in Borneo and Brazil, before being first found in South Africa, where along the banks of the Orange River occurred the Worlds greatest diamond rush!

Recent Diamond History

Diamonds were first discovered in Australia around the mid-nineteenth century, but it was not until the 1970's that Australia's full potential as a source of diamonds was realised.

Today diamonds are mined in many Countries, but primarily in Botswana, Russia, Canada, South Africa and Australia. They are also being regularly found in many other African Countries.
