For runners or other fitness buffs who are considering taking up trail running, it's important to also consider the running shoes they wear. Trail running can be compared to running an obstacle course, with dips and bends, roots and rocks. In other words, the ground is very uneven and can also be unpredictable. Those that want to seek out trail running as a sport should ensure that they are wearing sport specific trail running shoes.

Trail running has gained popularity around the globe. Along with with this popularity also brings a market for trail running shoes, so it shouldn't be difficult to find a proper pair.

1. Trail running shoes can't really compare with regular running shoes. Trail runners have thick, knobby soles that will provide traction on uneven surfaces. Since trail surfaces are softer than the road, trail runners tend not to have as much cushioning as road running shoes. Also, the sole of the shoe is thinner and made from a special compound which retracts objects. This provides the runner better stability and reduces the risk of sharp objects cutting through the shoe.

2. Some other features that are available only on trail running shoes is a much stronger construction to hold up to the elements. The manufacturers of trail running shoes know that the shoes will be taking a beating, so they need to be designed to hold up and maintain their durability. Trail shoes should also be fairly waterproof but breathable, so that the runner's feet will stay sweat free.

3. Even though a trail shoe is slimmer than regular running shoes, they are amazing at being able to absorb shock from rough grounding. They are also great at being able to cling to those wet, slippery surfaces that are typically caked with mud and moss.

4. Go with trail shoes that are made of polyester or nylon uppers. These materials will allow your feet to breathe keeping it dry. If you can afford to get the ones that come with specialized material uppers then even better. These materials are not only good at keeping your feet sweat free, but they are also water proof and very easy to clean.

5. Make sure that your shoes fit you snugly. Your shoe should feel one with your feet and the only thing that should have free movement is your toes. This will ensure that you do not slip or get blisters on your feet. Also go with a shoe that will expand a little for those times when you may want to wear thicker socks.

6. Unlike hiking shoes, trail shoes weigh only around 2 lbs or less a pair. Make sure to choose a light pair. This will help you not to get tired as quickly.

7. Don't cheap out on trail shoes. It's important to have a pair that are going to stand the test of wear. In other words, be durable, stable and comfortable. A hiking or mountain equipment shop will have staff that can provide information and experience in the purchase trail running shoes.

8. And finally, if you are buying a new pair of trail running shoes, then you should also spend a little bit extra and get a good pair of running socks.
