A long, long time ago...in a galaxy far away, there was a young geek with a head full of dreams. This geek wanted to start a business on the Internet and sell funny geek t-shirts to other young nerds such as himself. It was part business venture and part desire to connect with others like himself. Years passed and the idea seemed to be slowly dying on the vine. Then one day, things started to change. Funny geek t-shirts started selling, and selling well. People were finally embracing the world of geekdom!
Now that my funny geek t-shirts are selling well, I have the chance to stop sweating bullets and start thinking about the role of geeks in society today. From the level of sales I've seen recently, there must be other people besides your average nerds who are buying my product. This doesn't just say something about my business, but about the status of dorks in popular culture as a whole.
The years I spent in high school were some of the worst years of my life. Kids can be crueler than any evil dictator, and there were hundreds of them in my school. I took refuge in my comic books and video games. I spent my alone time (and there was a lot of it) learning how to master a computer before many knew anything about them. Can I catch a break for kind of resenting these same types of people who used to prosecute me are now pretending to BE me?
Technology is the cause of this angst I feel. Where once technology was something that only a select few of us dabbled in because we had a genuine passion for it, now technology is forced upon the ignorant because they HAVE to learn it or be left far behind the rest of us. Mark Zuckerberg may be the biggest nerd there's ever been since the original "Revenge of the Nerds" released to theaters. Now, he's regarded as one of the most influential people in the whole world.
The funny geek t-shirt used to be something I wore so that other geeks could spot me. It was a way to socially announce myself as a geek and I was safe for other geeks to approach and talk about Stargate SG-1. Now there's no telling who you're talking to when you see someone wearing a funny geek t-shirt. The age of exclusionism for nerds is over. We're being forced out into the sunshine by the rest of the world, and we may just find that we're going to be more popular than we thought we were.
