Know All About The Emerald Gems Clarity And Cut

By John S Stewart

Emerald Clarity

The clarity of emerald jewellery, in such as emerald rings, emerald earrings and emerald pendants, is not so as important as that of colour, because the inclusions and other blemishes found inside are natural and sometimes preferred, and therefore do not diminish the beauty or value of the stone. Obviously the smaller the number of these inclusions that are present, will however increase its value. They are also a good source of determining wether a stone is in fact real or fake.

The more light that passes through the stone without inference will provide greater sparkle and lustre, and therefore greater clarity is produced.

The Emerald Cut

The better the way in which a emerald has been faceted will definitely produce more lustre and sparkle from the stone.

The perfect cut though is not as essential for this gem as it is with other gems, because the depth of colour of the emerald is more importantly required and the amount of inclusions may prevent much in the way of sparkle. Certain cuts are better for the emerald to show of this colour instead of sparkle, such as "emerald" cut which was in fact especially produced for the emerald stone.

It is always beneficial that anybody wishing to purchase these gems do so knowing the difference between good and bad cuts.

Looking at the Cuts of Emerald

Emerald "Fish Eye"

If the angle of the gem at its base is not cut to proper proportions then you will see right through it without any light being reflected back to you, or any sparkle seen.

Uneven Facets

These are much more pronounced and easily seen with the cuts that have starlight edges, such as emerald cuts, princess cuts, baguette cuts and step cuts, rather than say rounds or pears. These may show uneven lengths which can distort the appearance of the gem, especially when sitting in jewellery.

Polish of Emerald

This gemstone can sometimes be very difficult to polish because of the structure of it. Make sure it has no dull spots and that it reflects light evenly, by turning it around in artificial and natural light sources. Emeralds are prone also to external cracks and blemishes that may appear on the surface, so if you do see these then it is better to avoid purchasing, because they may open up and lead to trouble in the future.
