Gun T-Shirts And The AK-47 Culture

By William Thatcher

The AK-47 is a weapon that has become iconic in our modern day culture. On film and television, there is an AK rifle featured somewhere almost constantly. These weapons have cemented their place in the American subconscious to the point where we are guaranteed to continue seeing it in our media for years to come, despite the fact that many of the major distributors of the gun have slowed production considerably. This is why we see the Kalashnikov featured on everything gun related, including popular gun t-shirts.
People who adhere to the second amendment tend to be giant fans of the AK-47. They will sport gun t-shirts with the AK depicted on it and often more than one Kalashnikov in their gun safe. The gun has come to symbolize, along with the popular AR-15, the pinnacle of gun ownership in the United States of America. There will be an outcry of anger if the government ever tries to stop the right of ownership of these weapons.

Mikhail Kalashnikov designed the AK-47 in 1947 at the very end of World War II in a contest to design the first real assault rifle. It shoots a 7.62x39mm round that does excessive tissue damage as it tumbles through the body and fragments. When it passes through the body without tumbling, the wound can be relatively minor. The technical named for the AK is the Avtomat Kalashnikova, as it appears on many gun t-shirts.

Even though the gun is immensely popular among many "gun nuts", the AK-47 has still retained much of the negative image that it has gathered over many long years of terrible media representation. The Kalashnikov is the most prolific weapon in the world, so it is no wonder that it has wound up in the hands of so many bad guys through the years. It has gotten so bad, that most Americans picture an AK in the hands of a terrorist when they bring up an image of one in their heads. Despite this, they still hold center stage on many gun t-shirts.

The AK-47 may symbolize many things, but it will always be in the consciousness of America. It is a symbol of war, and of terror. It is a symbol of the 2nd Amendment. It is a symbol of everything people love and hate in guns. We will wear our gun t-shirts, and we will hold our Kalashnikovs high. The weapon may have begun with the Russians, but now it belongs to the world.
