How To Keep Your Watch Working Longer

By Richard Stokes

When you have purchased a watch, it is important that you look after it well and treat it with respect. This is particularly true if you have invested in an expensive watch; consider it an investment, a beautiful and useful piece of jewellery.

An important thing that will help you to keep a watch in good condition, is to make sure that it is kept both clean and dry. Watches come into contact with substances such as dirt, sweat, and other things that may get it dirty on a daily basis. Fortunately, it is relatively simple to keep a watch clean. A simple wipe with a cloth made of a soft material should help you to get rid of any dirt build-up before it becomes too difficult to remove. When cleaning a watch, never use any abrasive items as you may scratch the watch face or watch strap and spoil the condition. Giving your watch a scrub with a soft toothbrush that has been dipped in warm, soapy water could effectively clean it. Try not to use a lot water while cleaning the watch and dry your watch immediately after you have cleaned it with a soft cloth material.

If your watch is not worn on a regular basis, ensure that it is still wound up or cleaned properly. Do wear your watch occasionally as it helps the lubricants work better and not solidify, which can cause friction and internal damage to your watch.

Watches are normally meant to be used in temperatures between 5 and 35 degrees. Try not to wear your watch in extreme temperatures, e.g. -10 or 60 degrees and upwards, as this can reduce the accuracy of your watch. Something else you should avoid is keeping your watch stored next to equipment that releases magnetic waves, like TV or sound equipment. You should also avoid storing your watch near other jewellery items, if they contain magnets, perfumes and medicines that can give off evaporated gases. Swimming is definitely something that isn't recommended while wearing a good watch. Even if your watch claims to be waterproof, chlorine can still damage it.

Following these tips should help you to keep your watch in good shape. It should allow you to keep your watch for a number of years without becoming too damaged to wear. You could also consider getting your watch serviced professionally every couple of years. During a professional service, the internal part of your watch will be oiled and cleaned, not just the external part of the watch that you could clean yourself. Following these tips should keep your watch performing at its optimal level for a long time.
