In my belief it is important that buying and selling Jewellery with Rubies, such as Ruby Rings, Ruby Earrings and Ruby Pendants, should be only done in the knowledge that they have only been mined under conflict free and ethical conditions.

Introduction

Giving a piece of jewellery containing a birthstone gem will offer the wearer good luck and protection. Monthly Birthstones symbolize the month of birth according to the Gregorian Calendar. Ruby is the birthstone of July and Rubies are the traditional wedding anniversary gift for a couple's 15th and 40th year.



Ruby was described as being the "King of Gems" by many old cultures, and its name was thought to have derived from the Latin word for red. Because the ruby represents devotion due its link with love, passion and romance through out the centuries, then it is only right that it is a popular choice for ruby eternity rings and ruby engagement rings

The Legend and Lore of Ruby

The ruby gemstones gives lovers and gamblers better luck according to popular believe. The ruby when worn on the left hand also is suggested to give the wearer magical powers according to superstition out of India.

To some the ruby was a representation of the sun. To others it represented integrity, devotion, happiness, healing, courage, romance, generosity, inspiration, and prosperity. According to legend, warriors implanted rubies under their skin to bring valor in battle. As a talisman, ruby would warn its owner against danger and disaster. Ground to a fine powder and placed on the tongue, it was believed by some ancient cultures to cure blood diseases, stop bleeding, ensure good health, bring peace, and treat indigestion.

In approximately 200BC the earliest trading of ruby was recorded when it was being transported along the North Silk Road from China towards Turkey.

Ruby Coronation rings in England have been popularly given between Royalty, with one good recent example being the ruby engagement ring offered by Prince Andrew to the Duchess of York. Ruby gemstones are generally smaller in average size compared to that of other gemstones, but the colours produced actually make them look bigger in comparison. Rubies will always command higher comparative prices due to being one of the more rare gemstones on earth.

Modern day means that rubies have other applications such as tiny bearings in watches, components made into rod form for the lazer, and for styluses in record turntables.

What is Ruby?

Ruby is one of the hardest natural gemstones - with only Diamond and Moissanite being harder. It belongs to the class of minerals called Corundum - second only to diamond in its hardness. When it is any colour other than red, it is called sapphire. Unlike diamond, which is made of carbon, ruby is a combination of aluminum and oxygen.

Where are Rubies Mined?

Historically the very best mines have been located in the Mogok Valley, around Myanmar in Burma, where many of the worlds best examples have been sourced, although these examples are decreasing rapidly. Rubies from Burma have been known to have the best clarity, saturation and hues, and therefore usually the most sought after and valuable.

Many other mines are around these days that now produce quality examples in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Cambodia, Tanzania, Pakistan, Nepal, Madagascar, USA, Vietnam and Afghanistan. Lately quality mines have been found in Kenya and Greenland.
