The Difference Between Fashion and Style

By Jayde Johannsen

If only fashion was just about what to buy, all millionaires would look great. Unfortunately, there's more to looking good than just plopping down the credit card and buying clothing. Regular women, without stylists and personal shoppers, have it the hardest. But never forget where most fashion comes from--broke young women with creative eyes and incredible lives who end up turning the high class world on its head at least one a decade somewhere in the world. If a broke 20 year old in New York's downtown can manage to start a fashion revolution, ladies, then you can find a way to revitalize the way you dress.

If your budget is stricter than that of the real housewives, or you're not a size zero, that's even more reason to learn to dress well. Living well is the best revenge, and showing the world that fashion isn't just the elite stomping grounds of a select few is a noble mission for many women. Furthermore, most of the ladies who are known today as tastemakers started out with very little money and still managed to impact the whole country with their distinct style. If that's not an encouraging reason to get going at dressing yourself better, then I simply don't know what is.

Starting simple, one of the best things you can do for your look is to minimize it to a single color. Take a look at the red carpet the next time there's a huge fashion show happening that's on television. See what the designers and the smart celebrities are wearing. More often than not, the women are clad in a simple, all-black outfit, and the men are sporting a similar suit look all in black. Not only does a single dark color flatter everyone's figure, it makes you look stylish because there's less room for error. Furthermore, dressing monochromatically lets your accessories do the talking for you.

If those accessories are going to be talking, they also need to know when to be quiet. Just as important as putting something on is knowing when to take it off. Don't overdo it with bags, shoes, belts, and necklaces, and certainly don't mix or match more than three or four colors. A gold belt with pearls and silver earrings? Honey, tone it down a little. The object isn't to wear everything you've got, it's to bring your look together in a way that's timeless and classy.

Size is crucial. One of the classiest things that anyone can do is learn what flatters their figure and what doesn't. Don't try to make yourself look smaller by wearing clothes one or two sizes too big, as it only makes you look worse. Likewise, the best way to flatter your body isn't to pretend you're still 14 and shove it into something that it simply doesn't fit into. A stylish woman knows how to pick an outfit that suits her body type and maximizes her attributes. Your clothes will last a whole lot longer if they're designed with your shape in mind, and you'll feel a lot better about yourself, too.

If you don't have the money for a new black dress or a pair of shoes to tie it all together, don't despair or mope around when you're out on the town. There's no reason to let a lack in funds drag your spirits down, especially when confidence is most of what fashion actually is. Keep a positive attitude about how you look and it will spread to others.

Make it work with what you've got, and always stay confident. Style is about attitude, and if you have the right one, no one's going to notice what the label on your handbag or shoes says. Many style icons came from nothing, and if they can do it, you can, too.

Now that you're focusing on style rather than trends, the world of fashion is a far friendlier place for you. Because while trends come and go and fashion itself is a cruel and fickle lady, style is something that lives on and can make or break your life. Instead of staring at your clothes and seeing what you always see, re-examine your wardrobe and figure out what's working and what needs to go. Likewise, with this fresh new outlook on style, you might find shopping a more pleasant experience that opens more doors than ever before. Don't be afraid of your new sense of style. Introduce it to the world, and let it make you feel better than you ever have before.
