Taking An Enjoyable Voyage Into The Past With This Curious George Costume

By Christine Carroll

"Curious George" is the central character in a book that was drawn and written by Hans Augusto Rey and Margaret Rey in 1941, after having fled Paris with the manuscript in 1940. This George Costume is fashioned after the little monkey known as Curious George.

The story begins with "The Man in the Yellow Hat", which he was called by throughout the series, brought this little monkey, George, home with him from Africa. It was he who took the monkey to places where mayhem would occur, but "The Man in the Yellow Hat" always managed to get George out of the spot. This was a book series that captured the attention of young and old, and was a repeat favorite of children for many years. Curious George could get into more trouble and have more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

Since earliest man started painting their faces with different colors as they prepared for camp fire rituals, they were unwittingly starting the idea of costumes. These paintings were most likely some form of reaching their spirit realm, but also provided the community entertainment and festivity. They were free to explore any possibility they might choose and handed them down to their children.

That conduct continued until they dressed in more elaborate clothing for warfare against their enemies, and developed into what we now call uniforms. This clothing endured many changes before resulting in standard dress for soldiers about the globe. All of which was pretty much a practical idea since it prevented them from killing their own people by mistake.

Each empire, dynasty or civilization developed their own costumes of clothing and consequently their ideas of costume creation varied as much as their ethnic beliefs. The Romans dressed much differently than the Egyptians, and they were very different from the inhabitants of England in their dress. So, it stood to reason that each regional empire would end up with their own unique ideas in developing their costumes.

Somewhere along the way, Masquerade parties were thought up and costumes took a whole new direction as people took extraordinary efforts to be the winner(s) of the best costume of them all. These parties allowed people to remain incognito, if they chose, and a whole new industry was born in costume making.

The period of time covering the Roaring 20's and the Great Depression had its effect on costumes, too. From Spats that buttoned down to cover shoes, to Fedora hats, and flowing gowns, they all played a major part in the development of the costume industry, and children's books offered cartoon like character to add to the mix. The George Costume is just one such item.

This Curious George Costume comes in sizes of toddler, small children and child medium. Complete with hands, feet, headpiece that are held in place with elastic bands, and the jumpsuit, all made of fleece. This is one of those opportunities where everything old is new again, and kids of all ages, including adults can enjoy reliving the days of yesteryear. There are very few childhood books that ever get another chance at publication, but this series was so popular that even today kids are still in love with Curious George and his adventures.
