The History of Eternity Rings

By Kieran Lawrence

Ladies are known since time immemorial to hold eternity rings dear. They have every reason to. The ring is made of a band of precious metal usually gold which is then lined by identically cut gemstones which completely surround the ring. It is quite a sight to see this ring resting on the finger of a woman.

Since the times of ancient Egyptian civilisations this ring has been a mark of royalty. The ring symbolised eternal life and love. The concept of a circle is that it has no finite end and the unending circle represents infinite trust. Eternity rings in the modern day are used to symbolise unending relationships and are therefore common for weddings and are used as celebration rings for anniversaries. They are unsuitable for proposals since the unending relationship has not been confirmed.
Originally, eternity rings had the stone studs going halfway around the band and were fashioned to look like a snake swallowing its own tail. They were popular on rock art and this helped propagate the concept of the unending cycle of life. They were initially meant to show eternal love but the meaning is open for personal interpretation, so they are used as just a precious gift.

The lustre of gold never fails and never rusts. This is the main reason why gold is so dear. An eternity ring will last as long as its name suggests, for an eternity. Such a gift leaves a lasting impression that will be revered for years.

The stones surrounding the ring should be properly cut so that the ring is comfortable to wear. Stones that jut off the side of the ring are undesirable and precision work is necessary. The gems commonly put in the ring are diamonds. They have a symbolic meaning since diamond is the hardest substance known and lasts for an eternity. They are used to represent loyalty, fidelity, and friendship that are the core for a lasting relationship.

Modern day rings have a raised metal ridge in which the stones are set. This makes for good protection of the ring and its form, since if a stone is knocked off against a hard surface then the ring's meaning and worth will be lost. The rings should be made to the specific wearer since cutting the band to adjust spoils everything that they represent. The beauty of the placement of the stones around the ring would also be spoilt by cutting the band.

The golden band rings are naturally very expensive so there is the option of platinum. However, there are cons in the market that sell knock offs with the band tha
