Pajama Pants - How To Properly Care For Your Silk Pajama Pants

By Cassie Clay

Silk pajama pants or lounge pants can add some luxury to your evening. But when it's time to wash your pants, you want to make sure you're doing what you can to keep them looking good for a long time.

The first thing you need to do when taking care of your silk clothing is check for the instructions found on the garment tag. This is where you can find the ideal way to wash your garment. But if the tag is missing or unreadable, the following guidelines will give you an idea of how to care for silk. But please also use your own common sense. I am not responsible for any mishaps that may occur.

Before you wash your silk garments, perform a spot test with water and mild soap in a hidden part of the garment. If the color runs or anything else looks off, go to a professional to have the piece cleaned. Do not wash the piece at home.

You can use a washing machine for some silk pajama pants and lounge pants. However, to keep them looking their best, it's ideal to hand wash these garments instead of throwing them in a washing machine. Wash it by hand in cool water with a mild soap. When you wash your garment, be gentle -- do not wring it out or let it soak for a long time. Silk must be treated with care because it is so delicate.

Empty the soapy water from the sink or tub, then refill it with fresh cool water that contains a bit of white vinegar. Vinegar is a natural fabric softener and booster, helping to remove soap residue from the garment. Empty the water and rinse again with plain cool water. Do not wring out the piece to get rid of the excess water. Instead, remove the excess water by rolling the piece in a clean, dry towel.

Silk's delicate fibers can be damaged by the heat settings on a dryer or by drying the piece in direct sunlight. If you must machine dry, then use the air-dry setting that uses no heat. Preferably, hang the garment so it dries in a place that does not receive direct sunlight.

If you need to iron your garment, do so while it is still damp, on the wrong side of the fabric. Use the "silk" or lowest setting on your iron to prevent scorching the fabric.
