Alicia Keys Fashion Icon

By Abigail Collins

Listed as being one of the greatest artists of recent times by VH1, Alicia Keys is certainly an icon when it comes to glamour and fashion. Her roles in hit movies such as Smokin' Aces, along with the promise of future projects with Disney, has all but secured her place in the spotlight as one of the most talented and prominent celebrities of the current time, as well as one of the most generous and caring when considering her charity work and philanthropic work.

The last ten years or so have been very good to Alicia Keys and that's because she's been very good to us, releasing a string of hit singles, albums, and dance tunes that have fuelled the night scene for the 00' decade and beyond. But Keys also likes to give the fashion world something to think about with her own unique sense of style that catches the photographers eyes at the events she attends.

Keys is a natural master of being able to balance jewellery and dresses to counteract each other, perhaps a talent that has translated from her ability to create good beats and rhythms for her music. She showed this talent at the Keep a Child Alive Black Ball in June 2011 where she offset the softness of a feathery black gown and train with a heavy-metal belt with spikes and prominent jewellery to emphasise the softness of her features and dress with a stark contrast. She accesorised using pieces from the Chaumet collection which did the job perfectly.

But the singer and song-writer is far from obsessed with how she looks, and it is characteristic of her down-to-earth personality that she is willing to step out without make-up or an overly glamorous dress. She attended the Alexander Wang and Altuzarra 2011 Fashion show and let the models on the catwalk do the talking as she relaxed and talked to the other guests, looking good in a white jacket and plain black skirt. It was fresh to see a more real look and highlighted the star's boldness to be herself.

Jewellery, though, must be considered the weakness of Alicia Keys' life. The fashion icon can scarcely be seen without sporting some of her favourite pieces, and in 2009 she wanted to share this love of jewellery that makes a statement about the individual by bringing out a designer range courtesy of Gisle Therault, of which each piece had an intricate design and a poem to help inspire the owner to believe in themselves and to be themselves. It was a lovely motivation for producing a designer range and a welcome thing to see among the many endorsements and other ranges.

If there is one golden rule with jewellery, though, it's that diamonds are a girl's best friend and Keys has proven no exception to this rule. Among the pieces she chooses to wear, the diamond is probably the most commonly recurring, and at the aptly titled 'Alicia Keys and her Piano' concert in Paris she showed off some sparkle with pieces from the prominent De Beers collection; with well over a hundred diamonds being worn by the singer.

Her track record for the last ten years is an impressive one, but considering how well things have gone and are going for Keys why stop? Just last June she put in many performances including one for the 2011 BET Awards and celebrated the tenth anniversary of her piano-themed album 'Songs in A Minor'; perhaps not the driving force behind her fame, but it's great to see that she remembers her roots and is still willing to pay homage to what is surely still an essential part of who she is.

But it's not all about the music, as Keys has taken on other professions such as acting and fashion designing. She is one of the lucky people who had the chance to do for a living what they were passionate about, and to be involved with many fantastic projects in a diverse range of industries. She is a multi-talented individual, and with her marriage to Swizz Beatz going strong it seems that the future is bright for Keys.
