It's A Jingle Out There In The Workplace

By Juana K. Foster

The guys I work with are all really tall. Really very, amazingly very tall. There was a lot of pressure to be competitive when I got hired at the local citywide newspaper. As the only girl reporter, I knew I'd have to prove myself over and over. One thing was a given I wasn't going to let these guys get the best of me. Clearly, the job required long hours where I needed to be up on my feet running around following leads. The remainder of my work hours was spend trying to get advertisers which I did on the phone making calls. The shoes I had were no way good enough for the work I was having to do and I found this out the first day of work. Then I recalled that my younger sister had given me a couple of Steve Madden coupons.

It was her way, I guess, to subtly nudge me in the direction of updating my shoes. I'll readily admit that as a journalist I was usually too busy dealing with deadlines than worrying about my appearance. The work I had before this one was strictly a desk job. Most of the time that I worked at the desk I could easily slip my shoes off and nobody at the office would even notice. That wasn't going to happen now.

The history of me and my shoes goes way back to the beginning. In school, I would be the girl with the shoes so worn out that my toes would be poking out through them. I like shoes when they are super comfortable. It used to be comfort over style for me when it came to shoes.

Growing up I always had the thought that the notion that there were much more important things than how I looked. I always wanted to make people think. I wanted people to look right at me and listen. Had I not had the little suggestion from my sister, I probably just would have gone to the store and purchased some sort of flat that I knew would be comfortable.

I ended up purchasing two pairs of stylish shoes because of my sister. I got a pair of purple leather pumps and a pair of solid black pumps. To my eternal amazement they are both very comfy as well. Not only was I going to be strutting around the office in comfort I was going to be looking fierce. Of late one of my favorite things to prove is that you can be beautiful, smart, and full of tiger's blood. Now I have the shoes to match the personality.

For over a year I've been working for the paper now. Shopping for shoes is more of a normal thing for me now. Comfort and amazing fashion are definitely more easy for me to combine now and I really appreciate it. As for the guys I work with, they may be much taller than me, but they are nowhere near the brutal force of nature that I am.
