Caring for DKNY Jewellery

By Owen Barker

Donna Karan combines a simple and yet glamorous elegance throughout her designs in the DKNY jewellery range. Designed to complement any outfit, the pieces can be tailored to suit any occasion or situation. Looking after your DKNY jewellery is a high priority as the majority of the range does not come cheaply and replacing your treasured pieces if they become damaged can often be an expensive process.

Metals are the main components of the DKNY range and although the designs aren't very colourful, they are based around mainly golds and silvers. Working with metal unfortunately has some downfalls and one of the main issues surrounding the longevity of metal is its ability to tarnish. Each metal has properties which means that they tarnish at different rates, stirling silver for example tarnishes quickly because of its copper element which oxidises quickly with the atmosphere. Gold in contrast is often labelled as a "tarnish-resistant" metal as it oxidises a lot more slowly than other materials.

Unfortunately, preventing tarnishing is not easy because the main cause is oxygen and naturally oxygen is all around us. Chemical cleaning and coating the jewellery with special wax can help reduce the tarnishing process and increase the longevity of your pieces of jewellery. You can also reduce the onset of tarnish simply by wearing your jewellery, the process of your skin rubbing against the jewellery can slowly rub off the tarnish and prevent it from becoming set within your precious designs.

Storing your jewellery can be crucial in delaying the onset of tarnish and keeping it in an oxygen free environment can really help to slow down the oxidation process. Plastic bags and airtight containers can help to store your jewellery correctly, jewellery boxes are also a great solution. If your jewellery has already started to tarnish then you can purchase special anti-tarnish products including strips and containers that absorb the oxygen from the atmosphere before it reaches your jewellery.

If your jewellery is already tarnished then there are ways to remove it, these normally involve specialist clothes which contain the appropriate chemicals. Leaving your jewellery with a soft, polished surface these cloths can help keep your jewellery in perfect condition.
