Bandana: A Fashionable Piece Of Material With Varied Uses

Bandanas can be used for a variety of applications. As such, these pieces of fabric are often likened to Swiss army knives with their many uses. A bandana, generally, is a piece of fabric worn around the neck as a head covering that is designed as a carefully patterned handkerchief or as a square piece of cloth. Nonetheless, the purpose of donning bandanas is not limited to covering the head. Rather, as was aforementioned, they are also used for a variety of purposes such as baby bandanas that act as cute fashion accessories for babies.

For nearly 200 years now, bandanas have been used for a variety of purposes worldwide. It was believed that these pieces of fabric were first made in India and were primarily worn by women as headscarves. Nonetheless, other historians claim that bandanas were first used by manual laborers. To keep dusts out of their collars, or to wipe the sweat off their face are the reasons why farmhands, for example, wear bandanas around their necks. Alternatively, bandanas were introduced in the US during the time of George Washington as tools for political struggle.

Bandanas have also witnessed a host of other applications in the past years. Companies, for example, utilized these items as marketing and advertising media. Examples of these companies that made use of bandanas are film producers of Old Western movies that featured cowboys wearing a piece of cloth tied around their necks. In the modern times, bandanas are popularly used as neckerchiefs and headscarves. Nonetheless, as was earlier stated, they are also being used as fashion accessories worn by kids-such as baby bandanas-and adults, alike.

Bandanas also are also being used today by gangs such as the Bloods and the Crips as symbols of their identity. The Bloods, for example, are widely known for their red bandanas while the Crips are often identified with their blue scarves. Helmet users such as motorcyclists and bikers also are among the most common users of bandanas. These individuals utilize these pieces of fabric as a barrier that provides protection to both skin and hair during travel. Likewise, dancers are also often seen wearing bandanas. These individuals, on the other hand, use these protective fabrics to keep their hair and sweat out of their faces.

Other noteworthy uses of bandanas are for hygiene and personal care, food and dining, clothing and bedding, and for first aid. Bandanas can be used as a washcloth, a face towel, or as an emergency substitute for feminine hygiene products, as such, are a great tool for hygiene and personal care. In food and dining, bandanas can be used as a tool to clean food items such as fruit and vegetables, as a tablecloth, a seat cover, or as a wrap to carry uneaten food. Also, these pieces of cloth can also act as pillow case covers, socks, headbands, and scarves, or even as a baby bandana. They can also be used for first aid in case of emergencies by acting as tourniquets, gauze pads, band aids, blister wraps, or as slings.

Among the items that can be regarded as valuable finds in the market are bandanas. With their uses varying between function and fashion-such as baby bandanas-these items of fabric are indeed must haves.
