Discovering The Origin Of Engagement Rings

By Eve Mieler

The origin of the engagement ring is believed to date back in 1215. Pope Innocent III announced a period of waiting to be observed from the time of betrothal towards the period of marriage. Believers started to wear an engagement ring to display the current or altered status of betrothed couples. The practice became well-known with slight variations everywhere in the world.

This ring on a woman's finger is a sign of her willingness and acceptance to marry a particular person. Typically engagement rings are given by males to women.

However, the other way around also is gaining recognition inside the US. In some countries like Finland, Norway etc each parties committed to marriage wear these rings.

The culture is different from location to location. In some countries the rings of men later becomes their wedding ring. Nevertheless, ladies get a second ring for their wedding. Males wearing both the rings are also in practice in some locations. Germans have these rings of simple gold bands. Throughout the wedding, this ring worn on the right hand gets shifted towards the left.

The place for engagement rings is normally on the left hand ring finger. The belief that the vein of love is located here results in this romantic belief. Some folks think the left hand is weaker than the right hand.

If you put the ring in your left hand, married couples achieve more strength from their new bond. The notion of 2 bodies and one soul is implied here.

All engagements need not culminate in marriage. Some engagements get broken because of various causes. On such occasions, should the lady return the ring back to the man? In most cultures, the lady will need not return the ring. In situation the woman will be the one who breaks the marriage off, the man has the freedom to ask for its return. He also can opt to let her keep the ring.

The idea and romance involved with engagement rings is time-tested. These engagement rings are, hopefully, here to stay forever!
