Children's fashion today

By James Brown

Socially clothes have always played an essential role, but while they have always remained important, today they play a much bigger role. As one of the most thriving industries in the world today, a persons fashion can represent their individual qualities, their views and their wealth. This is particularly true in the adult fashion world; however, recently this focus has been placed on children's fashion.

Throughout history children's clothes have always been scaled down versions of adult clothing. A child's clothes in history would often represent the contemporary social aspirations of the time as well as their parent's wealth. Very little interest was placed in what a child wore, except that it should illustrate the various luxuries a child's parents could afford. This, however, was still not recognised as children's fashion, as it offered children no individual identity.

Eventually adults began to view children and childhood different, there were a growing number of ideas about children and these ideas began to greatly influence the way children were dressed. These altered ideas saw children being dressed in clothes that were more appropriate, offered more freedom of movement and were considerably more comfortable. This new design of children's clothing saw a growing distinction between adult and children's clothing.

These initial changes have helped to develop today's children's clothing. In fact, these early changes have led to some revolutionary developments in children's clothing, in particular the gender neutrality of children's clothing, beginning with the approval of girls wearing trousers in the 1940's to boys wearing pink today. But more importantly, these initial developments led to children's fashion, which has increasingly grown in magnitude in recent years.

Children's fashion possesses a number of different aspects today, for example their cost, their use and their range, which are all carefully intertwined to create the children's fashion industry. The first aspect that differentiates children's fashion is their uses; there are everyday clothes or special occasion clothing for children. Special occasion clothes, worn at weddings for example, are often more gender specific, for instance girls generally wear dresses while boys wear a suit and tie combination. Alternatively, everyday or play clothes are more gender neutral and colourful items, for example both girls and boys wear trousers on a daily basis.

The price is also a stark contrast within children's fashion; today parents can choose to dress their children in low-priced clothes or pricey designer clothes. High street shops throughout Britain offer reasonably priced children's fashion, which follows the latest fashion trends. The variety and low price of high street children's fashion make it a popular choice for both special occasions and everyday use. In contrast, a growing number of parents select expensive designer or boutique for special occasions and everyday children's clothing. Parents can choose from a range of renowned fashion houses, including Dior, Burberry, Gap and Ralph Lauren, all of which offer an incredible children's fashion range.

Today children's fashion also offers a range of different items available for both boys and girls. Today parents and children have the options to choose a variety of different style dresses, skirts and trousers, while boys can select from a range of different T-shirts, shorts and trousers.

The variety of uses, styles, costs and items available has meant children's fashion is now a huge market. The size and quality of clothing for children can seem overwhelming, but the positive aspect of this is that children and parents are able to choose the right outfit, for the right price for each occasion.
