Introduction To Garnets

Introduction to Garnet

If you are going to buy Garnet Rings, Garnet Pendants, Garnet Earrings or any other variation of Garnet Jewellery, it is important to think about the following:

These are widely known as the "four Cs'" and consist of Colour, Clarity, Carat (weight) and finally Cut.

Noah famously used the magical lights that all garnets possess to take his Ark full of animals to safety in Biblical times. It has always been the gem used to present to people who are celebrating second anniversaries, and is the first birthstone gem for those who are born in January. It is said to prevent harm while sleeping from nightmares, bring about a sound and steady mind in the awaken state, and give the power of everlasting love to couples. It gives the wearer the powers of sincerity, devotion, protection, guidance and increased energy.

Garnet Colour

The colour of garnets is evident from the amount of chemical impurities found inside from such as iron, manganese, calcium and some other trace elements, and the amount of these impurities is dependent upon from which regions they are mined. The most well known and popular of these colours is the rich dark red/maroon colours, although it is to be found in all other colours except that of blue. In past times many examples of the more red coloured garnets have been wrongly called ruby.

The Garnet Clarity

The second most important of the four Cs' is said to be clarity when in comes down to overall quality, and this is basically how many inclusions are present within the stone. Stones should preferably be at least eye clean on viewing, but the better quality gems will be also loupe clean.

Garnet Weight (carat)

These gems have been found in the over a hundred carat range, but nowadays most will be seen up to around 10 carats in weight.

Garnet Cut

No matter what cut is prepared, they should always have a good finish and symmetry, and although not as important as the other four Cs', cut is still an integral part of overall quality. All shapes such as rounds, ovals, pears, marquise, princess, trillions and emerald are available easily. With all these finished cuts it is important that a good symmetry is present when viewing the stone form the side. cabochon shapes are rarely present with this gemstone.

If you are looking to buy garnets and jewellery with them, then hopefully this short guide can be of some help
